How to build a stopper for straws

# Materials

  • eraser
  • finishing nail(head of nail must be able to fit inside of straw)
  • sand paper
  • belt sander(optional)

# Steps

  • First, take the eraser and cut it to about a 1/4 in. diameter and 3/16 in. in height.
  • Then pierce the eraser with the nail as close to the center of the eraser as possible.
  • If using a belt sander skip this step. Next, use the sand paper to snad off the out side of the eraser equally so that it still remains in a circular shape. If possible make the eraser angled like a cork. Make sure to check and see wether the eraser has been sanded enough often. Do this by sticking the head of the nail side into the straw and try to fit it inside the straw. once the stopper will fit into the straw at least half way and stay by itself you know you have finished the stopper.
  • If not using a belt sander skip this step. Using the belt sander sand off some of the eraser. Spin the eraser in order to uniformly sand the eraser and keep its circular shape.
  • in order to pull the stopper out just pull on the nail.

# Uses

  • these stoppers can be used in many projects basicaly anything involving straws. I have used them to keep water in the boiler of a putt putt boat boiler while it heats up.
